Absence Excess Loss

Absence Excess Loss

Ok.. I know you must all be tired of seeing these doorknobs but here they are again.. installed at RoCo in Rochester... 2000.. and I counted again to make sure... so I guess I still need a few more. I think I will be making approx 2000-3000 more....

I had a wonderful week in Rochester. The curators of this exhibition organized an intense week of installation, artist talks , portfolio revues, and finally on Saturday a panel discussion. It was quite exhilarating to be with other artists for the week who shared so much common ground. If you have a chance to get to Rochester I think it is a show worth seeing.

....and congratulations to all those whose MFA thesis shows opened last night.

taxes

hey guys,
since the subject of taxes has been swirling around i just wanted to let everyone know that i can recommend an awesome tax lady. she has worked with artists and performers for years and will do everything in her power (and within the law) to help you out. the first time i went to her i had estimated my taxes online at turbotax and i OWED $3,000 (i was freelancing and hadn't payed in quarterly). anyway, she ended up getting me $600 BACK- totally legally. she's in manhattan, but worth the trip. she charges based on what you make, not what you get back and is very reasonable. i don't want to post her # since this blog is public, but if you want it let me know...

Thoughts on Thesis shows!

Dear Soon to be second years,
I had an interesting experience in preparing for my thesis show. I would like to offer my mistakes to hopefully help with your success in preparing for your shows! (you can read my blog to get the full understanding of what happened!) But my advice is simple: GET YOUR LOCATIONS SET NOW!!!!.. Take the time over the summer and scout locations, make arrangements, and get firm guidelines/dates now! I really wish you all the best! Take care!

chinese art and money

hi people,

i thought you'd be interested in this article about the art market frenzy going on in China these days...it's pretty well done and relevant to much of what we've been examining.

http://www.encyclopedia.com/doc/1G1-160421218.html

this copy of the article doesn't have any images...but i have the original in an issue of Art in America if anyone wants to see the related photos.

"The Gift" That Keeps On Giving

On the March 12 edition of NPR's Fresh Air, novelist Jonathan Letham talked about a project on his website called "Promiscuous Materials". The premise is that he's offering up various stories of his for other people to turn into films or plays, and song lyrics for other people to set to music--without his receiving his usual royalty for his intellectual property. In the Fresh Air interview, he cites Hyde's book as the inspiration for this experiment.

i was just about to share two other Gift-related projects, but I think I'll hold off to see if anyone brings them up in class this week or next... If not, I'll try my damnedest to remember to post them here.
